Housing Cairo: The Informal Response

Monday, 26 September, 04:00 pm [2016]
book launch, Zürich, ONA Focushalle E7

Approximately 60% of the population of Cairo lives in so-called informal housing, typically five-to-ten-story concrete-and-brick-infill structures built without permits in the desert or on former agricultural land. Housing Cairo: The Informal Response illuminates the architecture of informality and its mechanisms of production through theoretical essays and architectural design proposals. Central to the project is a re-examination of the concept of « informality » and its often negative connotations.

COMMONING - Urban Mutations on the Edge
Cities of Change: Addis Ababa

Monday, 20 February, 04:00 pm [2017]
lecture, Zürich, ONA Focushalle E7

While «commoning» usually refers to self-organized management of common natural resources (forests, water, pastures), we attempt to understand how the practice of commoning can be applied in an urban and architectural context and thus for common cultural resources. What are commoning practices within architecture and urban design? What are urban or architectural commons? Who creates them? How are they managed? What conditions must be met to establish such commons and the related practices of commoning?

Cairo's Desert Cities: Book Launch & Panel Discussion

Thursday, 18 May, 05:00 pm [2017]
book launch, Zürich, venue still unknown

After exploring the so-called informal districts of Cairo, we investigated the phenomenon of new desert cities. Findings of this research have now been compiled in the publication Cairo's Desert Cities, presenting these cities, their failure and relative success, and the urban conditions that have emerged. With the intention to launch a critical conversation, the following question is asked: If urban development in the desert is indispensable, how could such cities be designed in a more sustainable way?

« Housing Cairo: The (Informal) Response » and « Cairo's Desert Cities »

Saturday, 25 November [2017]
book launch, Cairo, The American University in Cairo

Focused on urban development of the Egyptian capital, the MAS Urban Design explored the so-called informal districts of Cairo with the publication Housing Cairo: The (Informal) Response (Best Architecture Book DAM 2016). As the book argues, Cairo's informal response to housing needs is not a marginal phe- nomenon, but an intelligent, optimized answer to planning incapacities, an answer that architects and planners should themselves be participating in.

Inclusive Tangier
MAS Urban Design at the Rabat Architecture Biennale Agora

from 23 until 25 March [2018]
architecture exhibition, Rabat, Morocco, Rabat Architecture Biennale

Inspecting the political, economic, and social reasons behind migration and the spatial conditions attached to both departure and arrival sites. How can urban designers tackle such situations? What does moving for a longer period of time and settling down socially, economically and culturally entails spatially at urban, rural and periurban scales? What can be the response of design to the notion of ‘staying', in the framework of an inclusive urbanism practice?
